Why Your Windscreen Insurance Is Enough — But You Still Can’t Claim Original Glass or Tinted

WINDSCREEN INSURANCE CLAIM Many car owners are surprised when their insurance coverage is sufficient, yet the insurance company still does not approve an original windscreen or tinted film. This situation is very common, and it is caused by how insurance companies structure their windscreen claim policy.

This article explains clearly why this happens, using simple examples, so you understand exactly what you can and cannot claim.

1. Insurance Follows “Like-for-Like” Replacement — Not Upgrade

Even if your windscreen coverage amount is more than enough, insurance companies will always check:

  • What type of windscreen you are currently using

  • Whether your windscreen currently has tinted

  • Whether the claim matches your existing condition

Insurance does not allow “free upgrades.”Meaning:

If your current windscreen is not original, insurance will not approve an original one.If your current windscreen has no tint, insurance will not approve tint.

This rule is the main reason why coverage being “sufficient” does not guarantee approval for original glass.

2. Why Original Windscreen Cannot Be Claimed (Even With Enough Coverage)

Insurance companies categorize windscreens by type:

  • Original / Genuine Glass (OEM Level)

  • Aftermarket / China Brand Glass

Even if the coverage amount is high, the insurer will only approve the same type you currently have.

✔ If your current windscreen is original

→ Insurance approves original.

✘ If your current windscreen is China brand

→ Insurance will only approve China brand, even if your RM coverage can pay for original.

This is because the claim must match your car’s existing condition, not upgrade it.

3. Why Tinted Cannot Be Claimed (Unless You Already Have It)

Tinted film follows the same “existing condition” rule.

✔ If your current windscreen already has tinted

→ Insurance allows tinted claim (as long as coverage is enough).

✘ If your current windscreen has no tinted

→ Insurance will not approve tinted — even if your coverage is more than enough.

Tinted is considered an accessory that cannot be added for free.

4. Real Example: Perodua Myvi (New Model)

Let’s say:

  • Windscreen insurance coverage: RM1000

  • Original windscreen + tinted cost: RM1000

Logically, RM1000 coverage is enough to cover original + tinted. But approval depends on your current windscreen.

Scenario A — Current Windscreen Is Original + Tinted

Insurance approves:✔ Original windscreen✔ Tinted→ Claim fully covered.

Scenario B — Current Windscreen Is China Brand + No Tinted

Insurance approves:✘ Original (not allowed)✘ Tinted (not allowed)→ Only approve China brand without tinted.

Even though RM1000 coverage is enough, upgrade is not allowed.

5. Why Insurance Companies Use This Rule

Insurance companies follow these principles:

  • Restore your car to the same condition, not better

  • Prevent unnecessary upgrade claims

  • Keep costs controlled and avoid unfair advantage

  • Ensure standardization across all policyholders

Therefore, their rule is simple:

Insurance replaces what you have now — not what you wish to upgrade to.

6. What If You Want Original Windscreen + Tinted?

You still have options:

Option 1: Top Up the Difference

You can request original glass and tinted, and pay the extra cost beyond insurance approval.

Option 2: Change to Original First (Self-Paid), Then Next Year Claim Original

If you want long-term original protection:

  1. Install original glass now (self-paid)

  2. Next renewal → Your windscreen coverage will officially be based on original

  3. Future claims can approve original again
